It is presented here exactly as it appeared in print — including language that is offensive by contemporary standards.

What you are about to read is an account of a battle fought between two Australian boxers — one Black, the other white, held at the National Sporting Club in London, England, on May 30, 1892. The combatants were Peter Jackson and Frank Slavin. Jackson, who was known as ‘The Black Prince,’ had held the World ‘Colored’ Heavyweight Title from 1888 until he vacated it in 1896. Frank Slavin was one of Australia’s most formidable heavyweights. The two men, who reportedly loathed one another, were fighting for one prize: The British Empire Heavyweight Championship.

The article, which recounts the ten rounds the two men fought, contains racial epithets and derogatory terms that were in common use in the British sporting press of the early twentieth century. TFLAC does not reproduce this language to shock or provoke. We reproduce it because it is part of the historical record — and because softening or erasing that record would be a disservice to the men who endured it and to the visitors who deserve to understand what they endured.

Peter Jackson was one of the greatest boxers of his era — a man of extraordinary skill, character, and dignity who was denied a World Heavyweight Championship bout because of the color line enforced by the sport’s white establishment. Frank Slavin, his opponent in this contest, was himself a participant in that racist system. The language the writer of this article chose to describe Jackson tells us as much about the culture that produced it as the fight report itself does.

THE TRIPLE FIGHT MUSEUM exists, in part, to ensure that the conscious and unconscious expressions of white supremacy embedded in the popular press of this era are not forgotten or minimized. The same newspapers and magazines that celebrated Black athletic excellence with one hand reached for dehumanizing language with the other — sometimes in the same sentence. Understanding that duality is essential to understanding the world these men competed in, and the world we have inherited from them.

For this reason, TFLAC also preserves and presents images of blackface minstrelsy alongside images of Black athletic achievement. The juxtaposition is not incidental. It is the argument. The same culture that produced Jack Johnson produced Coburn’s Minstrels. You cannot understand one without the other.

— Dan Perkins, Founder and Director, THE TRIPLE FIGHT MUSEUM / TFLAC

The Great Battle Between Peter Jackson and Frank Slavin at the National Sporting Club

No greater contest than that between Peter Jackson and Frank (“Paddy”) Slavin has ever been decided at the National Sporting Club. It was on May 30th, 1892, that they met, and those who were fortunate enough to witness the encounter will never forget it. About ten minutes to eleven in the evening a loud cheer announced the coming of one of the combatants. It was the redoubtable Frank Slavin. He strolled leisurely into the corner of the ring nearest the stage, and sat down. Jackson followed a few seconds later, and was greeted with a still louder cheer. Both looked exceedingly well, and in the matter of fitness there was nothing to choose between them. The match was scheduled to go twenty rounds with 4-oz. gloves for a purse of £2,000, winner to take £1,750 and the loser £250. Jackson had in his corner “Parson” Davies and Joe Choyinski, while Slavin was seconded by Tom Burrow, Tom Williams, and Jack Slavin. The officials were: Referee, Mr. J. B. Angle; timekeeper, Tom Anderson; timekeeper for Jackson, Lord Lonsdale; timekeeper for Slavin, Mr. George Piesse. The weights announced were: Jackson, 13st. 10lb.; Slavin, 13st. 3lb.

At 11.20 p.m., amidst breathless stillness, Tom Anderson’s voice rang out the signal to begin, and both jumped to the middle immediately. After a short spar Slavin rushed, but he was neatly slipped. Jackson tried a left, and got home lightly on the chest. Stealing in an inch or two closer he tried the same hit again, and received a hard punch in the body. They got to close quarters, Slavin scoring hard and often on the head and body. Breaking away, Frank landed a hot one on the side of the head, and Jackson countered with a hard straight left to the mouth. Slavin rushed again, feinted with the left, and drove a terrific right at Peter’s ribs; in doing so he of necessity gave his head, and Jackson punished the attempt with a clinking right to the face. Some fast work followed, and before the round finished it was clearly demonstrated that Jackson was the cleverer boxer, and Slavin the harder hitter.

Round 2.—Slavin rushed, but was beautifully slipped; Jackson now used his rival’s proferred head as a target for his long, deadly left hand. At first he half stopped, half parried the blows that Slavin sent in at the body; but after a short time he settled down to beautifully precise work, and as Frank drove in a left lead with force enough to smash the coloured man’s ribs in, he received a slashing crack on the left cheek that opened a gash in it several inches in length. Jackson dug a hard left in the stomach, and as Slavin’s head came forward in response to the tucking in of the ribs, he received a clinking right on the mouth. Slavin fought back in the most desperate fashion, but Jackson plied both hands at the body with such tremendous effect that Paddy staggered; but “Time” came to his relief.

Round 3.—Slavin came up looking very fresh, and was the first to get to work. Peter was evidently waiting for the usual rush; Frank swung a left at the jaw, but Jackson slipped him, and as Slavin turned to face him he napped two light blows on the ear. The white man then swung both hands at the head, but Jackson avoided, and replied with a stinging left on the nose. Feinting with the left at the body, he brought Slavin’s head forward and caught him a spanking crack on the left eye.

Round 4.—Slavin adopted different methods in the fourth round. He led at the face, and then hooked his man with the right. He kept following Jackson and boring in on him, but the latter retreated in skilful fashion, and timing his adversary accurately, he planted three beautiful shots—left-hand, straight—on the ribs and stomach, cleverly ducking Slavin’s swinging counters. Then Jackson assumed the aggressive, and getting home heavily on nose and mouth, he drew copious streams of carmine, and Slavin looked a beaten man all over; but the black was not, apparently, strong enough to make the matter a certainty.

Round 5.—Slavin rushed with more energy than judgment and paid the penalty, as Jackson met him with a bruising left full on the dial. Slavin next tried at the stomach, and then swung twice for the jaw, but was too far round. Then Jackson nailed him on the nose, and, getting him going, landed a very hard right on the jaw, but it was too far back for the desired effect. Frank suddenly jumped in with a left lead, and sent his foe’s head back with a beauty, flush on the nose. Peter soon recovered, and finished the round by getting home a pile-driving right-hander on the ribs, which made Frank grunt audibly.

Round 6.—In this round Slavin followed Jackson all over the ring, and drove him to his corner, and came within an ace of knocking him down. Peter, however, extricated himself with great skill from his position, and Slavin, rushing in again at the body, was met, as usual, with that long straight prop of Jackson’s, which effectually stopped his oncoming. He again swung at the head, but was quite out of distance, and Peter smiled. Slavin’s leads were erratic, his rushes ill-timed, and his counter-hitting slow and weak. Jackson now got to work again, and, with a bang on Frank’s nose drew another stream of ruby.

Round 7.—Slavin held his own for the first minute. Jackson was the first to make play, but his blows were only light ones, whilst Slavin planted two or three on the body, and then reached the face somewhat heavily. Jackson was evidently resting, for he waited on Slavin as he bored in, and welted him hard on the jaw with that larruping left, but got in return three clinking clouts full in the face. Just as “Time!” was called Jackson caught his opponent a tremendous smack on the jaw with the right which sent him reeling and dizzy to his corner.

Round 8.—Slavin led off with a couple of left-handers, but Jackson each time countered on the nose. Then there was a quick exchange of light blows, each seeming to be thinking more of scoring points, when, like a flash, Slavin shot his right home on the darkey’s jaw and sent him tottering across the ring. Pulling himself together as Frank went in boldly to finish him with body punches, Jackson plied his left with grand judgment of distance and wonderful timing, and Slavin received smash after smash in the face, his head being driven back with a jerk two or three times from the force of Peter’s blows.

TFLAC Editorial Note: The word “darkey” appears in the original text as published. Towards the close of the meeting Jackson got home four blows—two on each side of the jaw, and two straight smashes on the nose and mouth. Slavin was quite taken by surprise, and could not do anything. First he smashed him with the left in the stomach, and then sent a fearful right to the jaw, which made Frank hang his head as if his neck were half dislocated. Like a flash Jackson shot his left to the face and again on the side of the head. Poor Slavin looked in pitiful plight. He was dazed from the last two blows, and reeled about the ring. Jackson, seeing the hopelessness of his antagonist, went in with left and right, knocking him on the ropes, where he half-stood and half-hung in a semi-stupified state. Coming away from the ropes, Slavin dropped his hands and stood in a merciful way. Peter’s coolness and humanity were now shown in a remarkable way.
