About the Index of British Publications – 1910 in the TFM Collection
1910 was arguably the most consequential year in the history of modern boxing. Jack Johnson — the first Black man to hold the World Heavyweight Championship — had proven his eligibility the year before, defeating Great White Hopes, including the World Middleweight Champion, Stanley Ketchel. In 1910, Johnson was tasked with defending his title against the Greatest of all Hopes — former world heavyweight champion Jim Jeffries, whose decision to come out of retirement was so broadly and enthusiastically heralded by the American press that it bordered on a national summons. The Chicago Evening American, held in the TFM Collection, documents that fervor with unmistakable clarity. Billed as the Fight of the Century, the bout promised to restore what white America believed was the natural order of the heavyweight division.

Johnson delivered a different verdict entirely, defeating Jeffries in Reno, Nevada, on July 4th. The violence that erupted across the nation in response revealed, in the starkest possible terms, what the heavyweight title had come to mean in the racial imagination of white America. British and European sports publications covered this world with a depth, regularity, and inclusivity that American publications frequently refused to match. Where American outlets applied the Color Line to their coverage as readily as promoters applied it to their title fights, British weeklies documented Black fighters, international contenders, and the full competitive ecosystem of the sport — across weight classes, across continents, and across the racial boundaries that American boxing sought to enforce.
This index presents the British sports magazines held in the TFM Collection for the year 1910, organized by month and week of publication. Where an issue has been cataloged and presented in full, a cover image and link appear in the corresponding week. Where an issue is not yet held in the collection or is awaiting cataloging, the slot is marked EDITION NOT YET IN TFM COLLECTION.
Two publications are currently represented: BOXING, published every Wednesday at one penny, and THE BOXING WORLD AND ATHLETIC CHRONICLE, published every Thursday at a halfpenny. Both were among the most widely read sports weeklies in Edwardian England. Together they offer a composite view of how the sport was understood, debated, and documented week by week during one of the most significant years in boxing history.
Very little happens in isolation.
TFM Collection Note: Chicago Evening American, March 2, 1909. “Jeff’s Story Shows He Will Return to Ring and Fight Jack Johnson.” TFM private collection.
Truth is pursued. History is honored. Humanity is centered.
TFM — In the FIGHT FOR GOOD
Not every entry here is a simple magazine cover. Look closely — some open into deeper reflections that connect this collection to people, places, and questions far beyond 1910.
Note: The items in the TFM Collection are rare, and not every month is currently represented. TFM aims to provide as comprehensive a presentation as possible and will add new items to the Collection — and to this index — as they become available.
