Johnson delivered a different verdict entirely, defeating Jeffries in Reno, Nevada, on July 4th. The violence that erupted across the nation in response revealed, in the starkest possible terms, what the heavyweight title had come to mean in the racial imagination of white America. British and European sports publications covered this world with a depth, regularity, and inclusivity that American publications frequently refused to match. Where American outlets applied the Color Line to their coverage as readily as promoters applied it to their title fights, British weeklies documented Black fighters, international contenders, and the full competitive ecosystem of the sport — across weight classes, across continents, and across the racial boundaries that American boxing sought to enforce.

Two publications are currently represented: BOXING, published every Wednesday at one penny, and THE BOXING WORLD AND ATHLETIC CHRONICLE, published every Thursday at a halfpenny. Both were among the most widely read sports weeklies in Edwardian England. Together they offer a composite view of how the sport was understood, debated, and documented week by week during one of the most significant years in boxing history.
